Presidents' Day
15th Feb 2016
On the third Monday in February is an honored American holiday, Presidents’ Day. Did you know that Presidents’ Day originated in 1800 after George Washington’s death? Yes, it all started after President Washington passed away and the people wanted to declare a day of remembrance in honor of the most respected man in American history during that time. Our great nation celebrated this legendary day on February 22nd which is his date of birth.
Washington’s Day eventually evolved into Presidents’ Day as to not diminish the importance of any other president before or after him. And, it is also noted that in attempt to create more 3-day weekends for United States workers, Presidents’ Day was moved as part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Thus, having the national holiday fall on the third Monday of February.
Interesting Info: Presidents’ Day never falls on the actual birthday of any American president as of yet. There are several who have February birthdays but, they either fall before or after the 3rd Monday of the month.
